Here at Crow’s Nest Nursery, we have boxwoods that range from 12 inches up to 7 feet, and even 8 feet at times! We are intentional to SHAPE each boxwood, no matter the size, as wide (if not a little wider) as it is tall. We stay away from the “egg-shaped” or “stove pipe” or “Coke can” shape, as I call it. We want our boxwoods to have that fat, plump look that is natural and fluffy.
When we MEASURE our boxwoods for orders, we do not measure the height to be the tiniest leaf at the very tip top of the boxwood, nor do we measure the width to be edges of the leafs that are the very outside of the plant. We measure the “bulk” of the boxwood. This means that whether you order a 24” boxwood or a 48 incher (or any other size for that matter), you will be getting that specific size plant you ordered plus extra foliage that can trimmed off to get the desired shape and size.
When we DIG your boxwood order, we do not haphazardly rip and pull the boxwoods out of the ground so the plant has a root ball with holes and bare roots and is cracked and falling apart. We take the time to put the appropriate size root ball on the boxwood and we go around the ball multiple times making smaller gains, working a little bit at a time to ensure all the roots are fully cut which in turn ensures the root ball stays intact.
Once your boxwoods are dug, they are carefully carried out of the fields and brought to our holding location where they are kept “in the cool” and shaded. Your boxwoods are WATERED (the root ball is thoroughly soaked) and kept in ideal conditions until they are delivered to your doorstep.
The CARE & ROUTINE MAINTENANCE we give our boxwoods is unmatched. Our goal is to grow the most beautiful, healthiest boxwoods, period. The only way we can achieve that goal is to have the best maintenance which includes: the best fertilization, achieving ideal soil conditions for optimal root growth and health, consistent disease prevention and treatment, meticulous trimming and pruning to achieve that beautiful, fluffy and plump looking boxwood that is a wide as it is tall (or even maybe a little wider).
