About Crow’s Nest Nursery:
Crow’s Nest Nursery was founded by Worth Crow in the mid-’70s and today we are glad to say that we grow quality boxwoods “Worth Crowing” about! When Worth started, he began by planting seedling white pine and fraser fir Christmas trees on the hillsides of his farm in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Eventually, he started growing American boxwoods in the rich, bottom areas of the farm, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Once the small boxwood liners had grown to be big enough to market, Worth loaded his 1970s model Dodge passenger van with boxwoods and “hit” the road. With advice from another nurseryman who said, “You have to travel at least 150 miles away to find markets for boxwoods” Worth traveled into Virginia, Tennessee, into the eastern part of North Carolina, but eventually landed in a small town in Georgia called Atlanta.
On the famous strip running through the heart of Atlanta, Peachtree Road, Worth stopped at a shop that itself had newly opened and was selling pots (planters as it turns out to be) for people’s plants. Worth left a few of his boxwoods with the shop owner to see how they would sell, and those boxwoods did sell! Now,over 35 years later, we are still delivering quality boxwoods to that small start-up garden shop which is now one the biggest and best (if not THE biggest and best) landscape architect firms in the southeast, Planters.
Along the way, word got out about “Worth Crow” and his boxwoods became highly sought after among the most reputable landscapers and architects. One gardener, in particular, who loved Crow’s Nest Nursery boxwoods and the way Worth grew and cared for each plant was a designer/gardener named Ryan Gainey. Ryan Gainey helped shape and even transform the landscape architecture industry. Many landscape designers who worked with Ryan branched out and started their own companies. Part of the recipe for these newly started companies was to install Crow’s Nest Nursery Boxwoods!
Today Crow’s Nest Nursery is run by Worth’s son Jason who carries on the tradition of growing the finest quality boxwoods. Worth raised him to maintain the highest standard of care and attention to each boxwood and showed him that attention to detail matters no matter how little the task. At Crow’s Nest Nursery, the adage is believed that “the way you do anything is the way you do everything”. This affects everything we do, from how we trim, to how we fertilize and spray, to how we dig burlap and transport. We do everything to the best of our abilities and we believe that you will know that by the boxwoods you receive from us.
We have continued through the decades supplying the industry’s best boxwoods. We provide boxwoods that are as wide as they are tall (no “Coke can” or stovepipe or egg shapes) and through the growing season, our boxwoods develop that beautiful deep blue, green color. They look natural with even a “fluffiness” about them with plenty of extra foliage that can be trimmed off to achieve the desired shape, look, and size.
